About Sri Lankan west & south coasts

On the west coast dive sites are open from November to around 10th of April. In general there is good diving conditions in this period. The visibility is around 5 - 10 meters and water temperature is around 28-29°C. Generally speaking, in the west coast, most of the corals were destroyed during El Niño in 1998 through coral bleaching and the Tsunami in 2004. So you find less corals while diving on the south coast compared to the east coast. But deeper dive sites and most of shipwreks are located in the west and south cost of Sri Lanka. You have chance to see moray eels, nudibranchs, lionfish, angelfish and many tropical fish. If lucky you can spot Napoleon fish, turtle, stingray, scorpionfish or an octopus.

  • Kirinda SCUBA Diving - Kirinda deserves a seperate note. Kirinda is renowned for Great Basses. It is an approximately 40-kilometre-long underwater limestone geological formation. Its caves are unlikely in other places, soft corals and vertical walls makes Kirinda very special place. Its massive waves and surges which can throw you forward and backward make Kirinda exclusive for well experinced divers. This reef is virtually unreachable during the two Sri Lankan monsoon seasons. It is mostly dived during mid-March to mid-April when the conditions can be at their best during the brief inter-monsoon period.Kirinda is a coastal village lies about 5 km south-east of Palatupana entrance to Yala National Park. About Sri Lankan east coast

On the east coast the underwater visibility is good from mid March to end of October. The noticeable shipwreck site British Sergeant (24 m) in Batticaloa is a technical dive site. Dive sites in the east coast are still remain with beautiful coral and exsotic fish. The east coast was not affected by the El Niño in 1998. However, generally speaking, most of the diving sites in the east coast are found in relatively within shallow waters (10-20 m). The exceptions are Klathe Par (20-35 m) and Dijamba Gala (33 m) in Trinco.

The dive site we always decide in the morning depending on the sea conditions and divers experience.
