Discover the extraordinary biodiversity of the UNESCO-listed Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve on this immersive 2-day trekking and hiking experience with CCT Sri Lanka. Located in southwestern Sri Lanka, Sinharaja is the country’s last major primary tropical rainforest and one of the island’s richest ecosystems for endemic wildlife, birdlife, reptiles, amphibians, and rare flora.
This ancient rainforest is considered a living relic of the Gondwanaland supercontinent, making it globally important for biodiversity and evolutionary studies. Towering tropical trees, dense vegetation, hidden waterfalls, misty trails, and untouched jungle landscapes create one of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding nature experiences.
Sinharaja is world-famous for its mixed-species bird flocks and exceptional birdwatching opportunities. Bird lovers may encounter endemic species such as the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal, Yellow-fronted Barbet, Ashy-headed Laughingthrush, and Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot. The forest is also home to Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys, rare reptiles, colorful butterflies, amphibians, and elusive mammals including the Leopard and Golden Palm Civet.
Multiple rainforest entrances offer different trekking experiences. Kudawa is ideal for birding and flora trails, Morningside offers panoramic mountain scenery, while Lankagama, Kurulugala, Pitadeniya, and Wathugala provide access to waterfalls, rainforest streams, reptiles, butterflies, and deeper jungle trekking routes.
Depending on your interests, trekking options include birdwatching trails, waterfall hikes, nature walks, arboretum explorations, and night trails through the rainforest. Waterfalls accessible around Sinharaja include Kakuna Ella, Brahmin Ella, Duwili Ella, Malmora Ella, and Pathana Oya Ella.
