Intro
This off road drive to Horton Plains could start at 5.30 AM or around 2 PM. From Nuwara Eliya there are two ways one could drive to Horton Plains. As the passenger vehicles usually are not covered with insurance to drive off-road, our drivers have been advised not to drive inside this National Park.
On Google Map, you could clearly see the route to destination, local excursions and tourist interests. To have a clear view click " Â " and then un-click "Â Â " irrelevant layers. We constantly update our site with all those interesting facts.

More details
Maha Eliya (Horton Plains) - 2,100–2,388m
Maha Eliya (plain) is known as Horton Plains today and it is famous for accommodating World's End and  Baker's Falls within its premises. The country's main rivers get their birth at this place too. Â
The peaks of Kirigalpoththa, 7,835 ft (2,388 m), and Thotupola Kanda, 7,732 ft (2,357 m), the second and the third highest mountain-peaks respectively, are situated within this National Park. The rocks found in the park belong to the Archaean age (Relating to or denoting the aeon that constitutes the earlier, or middle, part of the Precambrian, in which there was no life on the earth). Â
Sambar Deer and Elk could be spotted in Maha Eliya. Calotes Nigrilabris (Black-lipped Lizard) is an endemic specie that could only be spotted within this National Park. Mountain Slender Lorises (pictured) are too thriving in this park, Zoological Society of London has found recently.Â
Some are very critical of high entrance fee charged at the entrance of this park and its poor facilities. That includes lack of information, roadside directions and clean toilet facilities. While we share those concern with you within reason we welcome your criticism to local authorities through us.
