A Fascinating History

The Portuguese first arrived in Galle by accident in 1505. Though they initially planned to settle in Colombo because of its proximity to the Kingdom of Kotte, King Rajasinghe I of Sitawaka attacked them in 1588, forcing them to retreat to Galle. There, they built a rudimentary fortress made of palm trees and mud, naming it Santa Cruz.

Later, the Portuguese reinforced this structure with a watchtower and three bastions—Sun, Moon, and Star—to protect the harbor. In 1640, the Dutch, with King Rajasinghe II’s assistance and a 2,500-strong force led by Koster, captured the fort from the Portuguese. Eventually, the British took control of the fortress on February 23, 1796.

UNESCO recognizes Galle Fort as a prime example of a European-built fortified city in South Asia, blending European architectural styles with South Asian traditions. As a result, this historic military stronghold transformed into a vibrant civil city.

Cultural and Religious Influences

Galle Fortress also reflects the cultural shifts of its many diverse occupants. For instance, during the Portuguese era, Muslim traders couldn’t live or trade within its walls. The Meeran Jumma Mosque, built in 1908 during the British period, adds a unique and fascinating layer to the fort's landscape. Today, most of the private buildings within the fort belong to the Muslim community.

Moreover, a derelict Portuguese church was replaced by a Buddhist temple in 1889 during British rule, further enhancing the historical and cultural layers of this remarkable site.
