Wilpattu National Park: Hunuwilagama Entrance

Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka, Wilpattu National Park is the island’s largest and one of its oldest protected areas, where nature flourishes in all its splendor. Famed for its rich biodiversity, it is home to the island’s largest population of leopards, making it a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

The park’s name, Wilpattu, comes from its unique villus (විල්ලු) —natural lakes scattered across the landscape. Wilpattu has two main entrances: Hunuwilagama and Eluwankulama. The Hunuwilagama Entrance, located near the ancient city of Anuradhapura, offers a blend of history and wildlife, while the Eluwankulama Entrance, closer to coastal Puttalam and Kalpitiya, provides a more tranquil route into the park.

Each entrance provides a distinct experience. The Hunuwilagama Entrance is known for its guaranteed sightings of sloth bears, especially during the Palu (පලු) fruit season. In contrast, the Eluwankulama Entrance offers peaceful game drives through the park’s scenic, less-traveled paths.

Wilpattu is home to an impressive array of wildlife, including leopards, elephants, sloth bears, and over 30 species of mammals. The park’s striking copper-red soils and diverse vegetation create a unique ecological environment. Moreover, Wilpattu holds historical significance as the legendary landing site of King Vijaya at Thambapanni (තම්බපන්නි), with ancient ruins that reflect the civilization of Queen Kuweni.

Immerse yourself in its serene landscapes, vibrant wildlife, and rich history—where every moment becomes a celebration of Sri Lanka’s wild beauty.
