Intro
Aluthapola Temple is located in close proximity to BI Airport & Negombo. King Walagamba, who was fleeing away from an invading South Indian army was rescued by the monastery at this place in 1st century BC. This is the first record of the existence of this Buddhist monastery at this place. Even though this temple reminds us of this 2,200 years old history, none of the old artifacts have been preserved sadly. Now there lays a ruin of Dutch observation point on the top of rock mountain. That observation point was built in 18th century. The modern Temple that you could see today was built in Kandian Era (1473 -1815).
