Visit Mannar and Talaimannar: The Gateway to Sri Lanka

Mannar and Talaimannar have long been recognised as strategic gateways to Sri Lanka. Historically, they served as key points of entry for travelers crossing from the Indian subcontinent and beyond. Ancient Greek records, dating back over 2,400 years, mention pearls sourced from the island of ‘Taprobane,’ an early reference to Sri Lanka’s famed pearl fishery. Famous travelers such as the Chinese scholar Fa-Hsien, who arrived in 411 A.D., and the Arab explorer Ibn Batuta, who visited in 1344 A.D., both documented seeing the precious pearls stored in the King’s royal treasury. Marco Polo also crossed through Mannar. The legend of King Vijaya, who landed near a place called Thambapanni (තම්බපණ්ණි), south of Mannar, further cements the historical importance of this region.

In addition, the mighty Malwathu Oya, Sri Lanka’s second largest inland river, joins the sea at Arippu, enhancing the area's natural splendor. CCT Sri Lanka invites you to visit Mannar and the surrounding area with one of our expert historians or naturalists, who will guide you through this rich cultural and natural heritage.

Malwathu Oya (මල්වතු ඔය)

Malwathu Oya, the second-longest river in Sri Lanka, stretches over 164 kilometers. It meanders through the paddy fields and forests of the Mannar District. The river flows from the North Central Province to the sea at Arippu and has shaped the region’s agricultural and cultural history. Once called the "Rice Bowl of Sri Lanka," Mannar’s fertile lands were nourished by this river. The river’s historical importance also extends to the colonial period, linking local communities to their environment.

Arippu

Arippu holds deep historical significance, as the British established their presence here due to the thriving pearl fishery. The Doric House, built by Frederick North, the 5th Earl of Guildford, the first British Governor of Ceylon (1798-1805), stands as a symbol of the area’s colonial past. North used the mansion as his residence during visits to oversee the pearl fishery. Later, it housed other British officials. Arippu is also important for another reason. It is where Robert Knox, the famous British prisoner of the Kandy Kingdom, escaped in 1679. After a journey through Anuradhapura and along Malwathu Oya, he reached the Dutch Fort at Arippu, marking a significant event in Sri Lanka’s colonial history.

Unfortunately, the prosperity of this region was halted by cholera epidemics. The bringing of sick Indian laborers at Arippu caused the outbreaks. The disease devastated local Sinhalese villages, forcing them to flee inland for safety.

Yoda Ella Arch Bridge

The Yoda Ella Arch Bridge is an impressive feat of engineering. It offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes, blending perfectly with nature. This beautiful structure is an important historical landmark, celebrating Sri Lanka's infrastructure and natural beauty.

Arch Bridge & Hanging Bridge

The Hanging Bridge across Malwathu Oya is another breathtaking feature. This suspension bridge offers sweeping views of the river and countryside. Visitors can enjoy a unique perspective of the area, making it a great spot for nature lovers and photographers.

Mannar Fort

Mannar Fort, built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and expanded by the Dutch, stands as a silent witness to the region’s colonial past. The fort’s strategic location and historical significance make it an essential stop on any tour. It offers a glimpse into Sri Lanka's colonial history, with its military architecture and stories of changing rule.

Doric House

The Doric House in Arippu is a symbol of British colonial architecture. Built by Frederick North, the first British Governor of Ceylon, this mansion was used during his visits to oversee the pearl fishery. The house reminds visitors of the importance of the pearl trade and the British influence in the region.

Baobab Tree

The Baobab tree in Mannar is an iconic symbol of the region’s colonial history. Known for its massive trunk and striking silhouette, the Baobab tree stands as a reminder of past colonial activities. It offers visitors a unique glimpse into the heritage and cultural legacy of the region.

Vankalai Birding Spots

Vankalai is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to a rich variety of migratory and native bird species. The wetlands attract bird enthusiasts from around the world. Vankalai is one of the best birding destinations in Sri Lanka, offering a chance to witness the island’s vibrant birdlife in its natural habitat.

Talaimannar Pier

Talaimannar Pier marks the end of the railway line from Colombo. Located by the Indian Ocean, this historic pier has been a gateway to Mannar Island for centuries. It offers serene views and a peaceful spot for reflection. The pier is also a connection to Sri Lanka’s maritime history, adding to the island's cultural heritage.
