Discover one of Sri Lanka’s most important migratory bird habitats on this two-day birdwatching experience in Mannar and Vankalai. Each year, thousands of migratory birds arrive from distant regions, using Vankalai as their key stopover before continuing across the island and again before their return migration.

Vankalai Bird Sanctuary, located between Mannar Island and the mainland, covers over 4,800 hectares of wetlands, lagoons, mangroves, salt marshes, and grasslands. It supports a rich variety of birdlife, including Spot-billed Duck, Comb Duck, Gadwall, Long-toed Stint, Peregrine Falcon, Temminck’s Stint, and Red-necked Phalarope.

The wetlands are also known for seasonal flamingo gatherings, creating one of the most striking wildlife scenes in Sri Lanka.

A rare natural highlight is the migration of Crimson Rose butterflies (Pachliopta hector), which cross the ocean from Tamil Nadu, India, to Sri Lanka—covering around 25 km before reaching the Mannar coastline.

Mannar is also home to ancient Baobab trees, believed to have been introduced by Arab traders centuries ago. Accommodation is arranged at a comfortable guesthouse with breakfast for a relaxed overnight stay.
