Horton Plains Trekking – Half Day Guided Trek Adventure
Join CCT Sri Lanka for a breathtaking Horton Plains Trekking experience, guided by experts who know the land and its stories. Nestled at an elevation between 2,100 and 2,388 meters, Horton Plains—traditionally known as Maha Eliya—is one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic and ecologically rich national parks. This half-day trek offers the chance to witness some of the country's most iconic natural features, including World’s End and Baker’s Falls.
Along the way, you’ll walk through montane grasslands and cloud forests that serve as the source of several of Sri Lanka’s major rivers. Additionally, you’ll pass two of the island’s highest peaks—Kirigalpoththa (2,388 m) and Thotupola Kanda (2,357 m)—both of which tower above the landscape within the park.
The geology here is equally fascinating. Rocks in Horton Plains date back to the Archaean age, formed long before life appeared on Earth. As you explore, you may encounter Sambar Deer grazing in open meadows. More importantly, the park is home to rare and endemic species, such as the Black-lipped Lizard (Calotes nigrilabris), found nowhere else in the world.
Wildlife lovers will also be thrilled by the possibility of leopard sightings. Though elusive, these majestic cats roam the area—and on rare occasions, even the black (melanistic) leopard has been spotted, adding mystery and excitement to the trek.
Moreover, the Mountain Slender Loris, a critically endangered primate, has recently been confirmed as part of the park’s wildlife community by the Zoological Society of London. Such sightings highlight the unique biodiversity that thrives here.
In summary, Horton Plains Trekking with CCT Sri Lanka is more than just a hike. It’s a journey through geological history, highland ecosystems, and rare wildlife encounters—all within a protected natural wonder. Let our guides lead you through one of Sri Lanka’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.
