Batticaloa Lagoon and its Surroundings

Batticaloa LagoonNestled between the Batticaloa Lagoon and the Indian Ocean, the city is surrounded by three lagoons: Batticaloa, Valaichchenai, and Vakari. The Batticaloa Lagoon, the largest of them all, stretches 56 km and spans 11,500 hectares. Its tranquil waters host mangrove swamps, seagrass beds, and a wide variety of water birds. Several bridges, including those leading to Puliayantheevu, Buffalo Island, and Bone Island, offer stunning views of the lagoon and the surrounding lands used for rice, coconut cultivation, and shrimp farming.

Batticaloa Fort

Batticaloa Fort

The Batticaloa Fort, built by the Portuguese in 1628 and later captured by the Dutch and British, stands as a testament to the city’s colonial past. Positioned at the eastern tip of the island, the fort faces both the lagoon and canals. Today, it houses government offices, but you can still visit the exterior, and with permission, walk along the high walls, where the view of the lagoon is simply breathtaking.

Opening hours - 8 AM - 17 PM

Entrance fees - None

Opened in 1925, the Kallady Bridge was once the longest in Sri Lanka. Today, it remains a vital part of daily life for pedestrians and cyclists. As you cross, you’ll be treated to the sight of fishermen casting nets, with the backdrop of a golden sunset—a picture-perfect moment.

Batticaloa Lighthouse

The nearby Batticaloa Lighthouse, built in 1913, stands proudly, though it’s not open to visitors. However, you can still enjoy the views from the surrounding area, and perhaps even visit the nearby amusement park or take a boat ride through the lagoon.
