If you're intrigued by the mythical sagas of nations and their real-world political developments, you'll find this itinerary fascinating.
Visiting Thambapanni (Kudiramalei) Point
Thambapani is traditionally recognized as the landing site of Prince Vijaya from North India around the 5th century BC, specifically around 543 BC, according to our country's historical chronicle, the Mahavamsa. For more details, you can read the relevant chapter in this chronicle. Additionally, cross-references to Prince Vijaya's coronation in Thambapani can be seen in the Ajanta Caves' paintings in India. You may find further insights in the video linked below.
However, we believe that our ancestral history is far more intricate. Recent DNA research, examining paternally inherited Y-chromosomes, maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA, and autosomal markers, reveals that native Sinhalese are closely related to the Vaddas, the local aboriginal population. The earliest evidence of Homo sapiens in this island was discovered accidentally in Pathirajawela, near Hambantota, and these artifacts have been dated to approximately 125,000 years before the present (as of January 1, 1950).
Long before the formation of the supercontinent Pangaea around 335 million years ago, this island was part of East Gondwana or Gondwanaland. The Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras, which included Pangaea, saw the formation of much of the island's bedrock, which is composed of deformed Proterozoic metamorphic rocks. The earliest forms of life evolved during the Proterozoic era.
Nanthi Kadal Lagoon
On May 18, 2009, Nanthi Kadal Lagoon and its surrounding beach area became a significant historical site in Sri Lanka. On this day, the Sri Lankan army successfully carried out one of the largest humanitarian rescue missions in modern history, freeing approximately 300,000 Tamil civilians who had been held hostage by the LTTE terrorist organization. These civilians had been used as human shields to protect the LTTE leadership. The events that took place here marked a pivotal moment in Sri Lankan history, representing both a dramatic rescue operation and a significant turning point in the country's conflict.
