Experience a half-day safari in one of Sri Lanka’s best national parks for observing wild elephants in their natural habitat. Udawalawe National Park is famous for its large elephant population, with sightings possible throughout the day, including midday. During the dry season, elephant herds are often seen gathering near the Walawe River and reservoir edges.
The park was established in 1972 following the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir, creating a protected sanctuary for displaced wildlife. Today, its open grasslands, scrub forests, and wetlands support a rich variety of animals and birdlife, making it one of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding safari destinations.
Apart from elephants, visitors may also encounter water buffalo, spotted deer, crocodiles, monkeys, jackals, and a wide range of bird species including eagles, storks, pelicans, kingfishers, bee-eaters, and peacocks.
With long safari tracks, scenic landscapes, and excellent wildlife visibility, Udawalawe offers a comfortable and memorable safari experience for both families and wildlife enthusiasts.
