Intro

Somawathi stupa (pagoda) was built by Prince Abaya for his princess Somawathi (sister of King Kavanthissa), in around 250 BC. But the princess then offered the pagoda and adjoining land to Arahat Mahinda, the eldest son of Asoka emperor in India. Arahat Mahinda was the one who brought the sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha to enshrine it in this pagoda. Arahat Mahinda had resided in this place until is death. This is quite history.
