Intro

This is a UNESCO world heritage site. The UNESCO writes that 'this is the best example of a fortified city built by' colonists in South and South-East Asia. This 500 year old magnificent fort was first founded by the Portuguese and later, 18th century, developed by the Dutch into a 130 acres fort.

Even though Portuguese landed at Galle in 1505 by an accident they tried to settle in Colombo because of its proximity to Kotte King. However, in 1588 they were attacked by the Sinhalese Sitawaka King, King Raja Singha I (1581–93). Portuguese then retreated to Galle and built the initially building with palm trees and mud. Royston Ellis says they called it the Santa Cruz. Portuguese later extended it with a watch tower and three bastions and a fortalice to guard the harbour. The Dutch, with the help of  king Rajasinghe II and of a force of some 2,500 men under Koster, captured the fort from the Portuguese in 1640. The Brits took over the fort on 23 February 1796.

The UNESCO asserts that Galle Fort is a best example of fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions. This huge fort has now been redesigned as a civil city with shopping areas and sightseeing. Even world class boutique hotels are inside this fort.
