Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

This is the largest Elephant Orphanage and nursery as such in the world. The orphanage is also a captive breeding ground.

There are daily bathing and feeding times in the orphanage that our visitors are enjoying.

They are about 93 of them today. And number is always changing as some are re-homed into the wild and new once are brought in. Little ones are fed milk and given foods.

You could buy a plate of fruits or a bottle of milk to feed them from your own hands. The immense amount of water required by the elephants is supplemented with the availability of Ma Oya running close by.

The Orphanage was established on 16th of February 1975.  The orphanage is dedicated towards the welfare of the Asian elephants and for abandoned young elephant calves. The place is also ensuring the safety and well being of mature wounded elephants.
